In 1903, the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway was opened to the public with great fanfare. It lived a quiet existence with quaint trains taking people and goods between the two places in its name, and halts along the way for many years. The railway closed in 1956 and with it, this relic of our agricultural and industrial past would have disappeared but for determined individuals.
Preservationists have toiled for over 60 years since the railway's closure to reopen the line, rebuild locomotives, restore stations and so much more. We are now home to trains from all around the globe, carry thousands of welcome visitors every year and can still recreate - completely authentically - our original trains.
We would normally be preparing to open for the summer season at this very moment. Instead, our railway is shut and struggling to cope with the dramatic impact that COVID-19 is having on our finances. We have reserves, but these will be eroded over time. Drastic action has already been taken to cut costs as much as we can but further may be needed if we cannot raise funds to ensure our continued success.
So far the amount raised is £40,000 and we would like to thank all of our supporters and friends for the great and generous support given.
We are still asking you to help us today. You can do this in several ways.
