The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway was opened in 1903 to connect the agricultural valley community to the national network.  It made nobody rich but opened up the area, offering access to distant markets and allowing farming to prosper. It passed through the hands of the old GWR to British Railways, who closed the line in 1956, bringing to an end just over 50 years of service from a unique railway - but enthusiasts had other ideas.  Well-wishers banded together to form a “supporters” organisation which gained control of the railway, leading to its reopening in 1963.  The whole line has been restored by the W&LLR Preservation Company and even the two original locomotives are back at work together on a much-improved railway that has recently passed its centenary. The Company is owned and run by the members who elect a Board of Directors and place day-to-day control in the hands of the General Manager and his staff.  The goodwill and fundraising of our supporters is paramount; not everyone is able to work on the railway; some prefer just to support it by being a member of the W&LLR Preservation Company.

New members are always welcome and when you join you become a real part of the railway, one that is a unique enterprise with a fascinating history.  To those who would like to help us, we extend an invitation to become members of the Company.

Members’ benefits include free travel and a quarterly magazine as well as a vote at company meetings.  Whether coming for the day or staying for a few nights, volunteers can use our railwaymen’s lodge – ‘Keyse Cottage’, at Llanfair Caereinion.

Become a Volunteer!

Most of the staff you see on the W&L are volunteers giving their time to help run the railway.  Anybody can join in with this in one way or another, from driving the engines, tending the track, painting the carriages and looking after the shop to designing and writing the posters and publicity!  We couldn’t run without volunteers; they are the breath of life for the line. If we didn’t have our supporters then we wouldn’t be able to keep going.   Guard
Most jobs are done by people in their spare time, who have learned to work as railway professionals for the sheer fun and challenge of it.  Training is given to newcomers from people who are pleased to teach them.  The standards are high with a quality of service and safety second to none.  Jobs are available for people who wish to visit for just a few days to every week of the year.
Lady Fireperson Volunteers have been involved in everything to do with the restoration of the line which has been a massive undertaking. The work has involved refurbishing track, building new stations and workshops plus rescuing and rebuilding  rolling  stock  from distant parts of the world. The happy ending to the story is that, as well as having a delightful railway; the volunteers get such enjoyment from their association with the line.

(Volunteering is open to men and women aged 16 or over. Some operating duties, where safety performance criteria apply, may not be appropriate for people with impairments).
