The
African Train, comprising former Sierra Leone Railway
locomotive No.85 and recently renovated carriages 1066 and
1207, will be making four journeys during the weekend.
Loco
No.85 (Hunslet Engine Co, Leeds No. 3815) was built in 1954,
the last of 32 similar engines for the Sierra Leone Railway
(the first was built in 1898). After closure of the
railway No.85 was returned to the UK in 1975, and entered
service on the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway in
1979. The locomotive is turned out in black undercoat to replicate its appearance in Africa.
Carriages
1066 and 1207 were built by the Gloucester Carriage and
Wagon Company in 1961 and were supplied by Britain to the
Sierra Leone government at the time of independence.
They returned to the UK with the locomotive and have
recently been renovated to give a likeness to their original
appearance.
